This week we have embraced the cold weather and have been learning all about penguins and their habitats. On Monday morning a suitcase was found in our classroom. The contents were somewhat different from normal as it contained snowballs, a small can of sardines and a small picnic blanket. We had decided to take it to Mrs Gates for it to be added to lost and found, when we came across a trail of snow leading to a box. Inside was a penguin with a label asking to be looked after. This started off a whole discussion about what information you need to know in order to look after something i.e. a pet. The children went away in groups to research penguins using books and iPads. Using the knowledge we have gathered we have begun putting together our own book of penguin facts. The book we have been reading this week is Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers as we thought this story may have been about our penguin. This has also opened up talk about the characters emotions and what a good friend is. We had a group discussion and vote on what name to give the penguin. I’m pleased to say it wasn’t as controversial as normal politics and we came to a unanimous decision. And the name chosen was........Woody, which was chosen by Rossi. This week we have also been learning about measurement. We have been measuring ourselves, using a piece of string cut to the correct height. The children have then been using this to find objects within the class room which are taller or shorter then them. We have also been measuring items with cut out penguin and polar bear feet.

Our star of the week is Esme.

Our merit certificates this week go to Adam for fantastic maths and Jamie for putting 100% effort into everything he does.
